GENERATION GAP

by Stan C. Countz

They grew up on Skittles and CDs
Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast
We loved Stuart Little and Wheaties
Koolaid, Lucy and Grease

We were stayin’ alive, loved the Jackson Five
Butterfly handlebars and banana seats
They’ve never heard a forty-five, they’ve barely learned to drive
And they Limewire all their beats

Our Christmas gifts were “wrapped”
Cars and girls were “boss” and “neat”
Where’s this “generation gap?”
Tunes weren’t just awesome beats

We loved soul, rock and roll and doo wop
Billy Joel, “trolls” and crew tops
They love “Holes”, “LOLs” and hip hop
Wear extensions in their hair and lip gloss

Before Gateway, Bill Gates and Dell
“Intel” was news from the frontline
The King could sing from a jail cell
Ma Bell had us chat on a “party line”

No smartphone, no ipad, no cell
We “heard it through the grapevine”
Our phones were still owned by Ma Bell
Encyclopedias weren’t online

Got “hardware” at the hardware store
A “chip” was a little piece of wood
“Software” was what the ladies wore
And cowboys were always good

They wore white hats with red bandanas
We loved “Parent Trap” and “Pollyanna”
Tried to hide our “Lyin’ Eyes” and we idolized Santana
We all cried when “Ol’ Yeller” died and at the burnin’ of Atlanta

The Beatles needed our “Help”
“Pschyo” gave us all a fright
Only hound dogs “yelped”
Never heard of gigahertz or gigabytes

The Beach Boys really made some noise
The Beatles never missed a beat
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys
Couldn’t stop “Groovin’” and movin’ our feet

Hit the beach with Annette and Frankie
Had whitewall tires and a “rumble seat”
The only gang in town was Spanky’s
And we liked Alfalfa and Buckwheat
